Why you should take a mock driving test

I have always offered mock tests to my customers (sometimes one, sometimes ten!), but I feel that given the current situation, mock tests are vital. One of the consequences of repeated lockdowns and COVID-19 restrictions is that there is a significant wait for driving tests (the national average is 17 weeks). This means you want to be extra prepared for that driving test so that you have the best chance of success, won't have another long wait and risk your theory test running out, and it helps others who are learning to drive. You want that full licence after the first attempt, saving you money in the long run.

In an ideal world, you would go to the real thing having passed a mock test, but that in itself is no guarantee of success on the day. What mock tests can do is highlight any weaknesses in your driving, identifying where to focus our efforts on the remaining lessons. If there's time, it can be helpful to do another mock test once you have worked on those weak spots. A mock test also gives you an idea of what to expect on the day, this will help calm your nerves for the real thing, and gives you a chance to ask questions if you're not sure about anything. I usually conduct the mock test myself, but if you want to pile on the pressure I can arrange for another instructor to take you out (there may be an additional charge for this). The DVSA have found that there is a better first time pass rate with those candidates who took a mock test (March 2021).

I make the effort to ensure the mock test is as close to the real thing as I can. I use actual test routes and ask you to do everything the examiner would ask you to do on a test. I play the role of the examiner so I will act like I don't know you. One difference is that with the real test, if you do anything that would result in a fail, you will be guided back to the test centre and the test will finish early. I like to give people the full experience so you will complete the route, even if you would have failed in the first few minutes. If you still have questions about mock tests and how they can help you, feel free to contact me.
